St.George's Greek Orthodox Church

The oldest history of the church dates back to the 6th century AD during the Byzantine era.
The current church dates back in 1896 AD.

The Madaba Mosaic Map covers the floor of the Greek Orthodox Church of St.George.
It is located in the apse of St. George's Church. It has 150 Greek inscriptions.
The Mosaic Map was originally around 25m x 25m, dates back to 560 AD.
It is the oldest map of the Holy Land that is still extant.

In the upper part is Jordan River and Dead Sea.
The map once contained more than two million pieces, only about a quarter of which is preserved.
It is now 15.6m x 6m (94 sq.m.).

The mosaic map depicts an area from Lebanon in the north to the Nile Delta in the south,
and from the Mediterranean Sea in the west to the Eastern Desert.

Five other Byzantine churches have been discovered in Madaba, all with nice mosaics.
This has led to Madaba’s designation as "The city of mosaics".

The Kings Way Portrait
This is a gift from Madaba Tourism Association to the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.
The Kings Highway Portrait depicts the ancient trade route in a similar style.
The Highway connected Africa with Mesopotamia, running from Egypt across the Sinai Peninsula to Aqaba, then to Damascus and the Euphrates River.

The Portrait measures 5.7m high by 29.4m long and contains 3.5 million tiles.
It is the largest mosaic portrait in the world by Guinness World Records.
